Whiskey Lullaby

Whiskey Lullaby

She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart he spent his whole life tryin' to forget
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind
Until the night

1st Chorus
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I'll love her till I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby

lalalalalalala
lalalalalalala

lalalalalalala
lalalalalalala

The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
Until the night

2nd Chorus
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby

lalalalalalala
lalalalalalala

lalalalalalala
lalalalalalala

Whiskey Lullaby has got to be one of the saddest song ever written in country music. Alison Kraus and Brad Paisley definitely hit many hearts with this song. Its about two young lovers that have ended up broken up, and the boy cannot deal with the loss of the girl, so he turns to alcohol to attempt to drown away any thought of her. Yet it fails and done night he had enough and he passes away. He committed suicide with a note written to her. When the girl gets news of what happens she cannot take it, and she attempts to also drown away her pain in alcohol. One night she finally drank enough to where she also died but instead of a note she dies clinging to his picture. She cannot live without him and her last image is that picture of him. Even though it is never good to turn to any type of alcohol to solve problems the story behind the song is so touching it will literally bring tears to your eyes because you know somewhere out there someone experienced that same thing and is no longer here. Love does weird and crazy things to a person but you never really wish for it to be the death of a person. No one wants that to happen to anyone... Losing the one you love is the ultimate loss that people never truly get over.

  1. I really like this song as well. I tend to listen to sadder songs, and this is the epiphany of them. Brad Paisley and Allison Krause's voices are so beautiful and care tons of emotion with them. I love that you can hear the depressed, longing tones in this beautiful, heart felt duet.

  2. I've known this song for a long time now, I always recognized it when it played on the radio when I was little. It made me cry the first time I really paid attention to the lyrics. The imagery of the two of them falling asleep with physical memories of their loved ones really gets me every time. I think I like the music video better because they reunite at the end, as seen by the little girl.
